MiSTer FPGA – Thrash Rally (スラッシュ・ラリー) / Neo Geo [1cc Paris-Dakar]

Thrash Rally is an early Neo Geo game that seems very simplistic and dated at first glance, but is quite fun once you get the hang of it. Basically, you want to learn how to drive the courses without letting off the gas button. It takes a bit of practice with a couple of the crazy corner types, but once you get those down, I found this to be a very enjoyable classic racer.

Keep in mind that the other cars you see while driving, are not your direct opponents. You have nothing to gain getting in front of them. Only the time you get through the sections matters, so treat the other cars purely as an obstacle in this one.

The World Rally mode becomes pretty much unwinnable on the fourth race, without continuing, but the Paris-Dakar rally can be bested with a little bit of practice. The time limit is brutal, and I’m not sure that the difficulty settings in the bios do anything helpful there.

Overall, this is well worth the time to learn for fans of classic arcade racing games, as long as you know what to expect going in. It can seem overly frustrating with the limited time at first, but before long you’ll be peeling out on the corners with ease if you stick with it.

A spiritual successor to this game on Neo Geo, is « Over Top », and fans of the genre should also check out « Neo Drift Out ».
