SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : http://www.patreon.com/VideoGameEsoteric MiSTer FPGA vs emulation time with a preview of the MiSTer FPGA Saturn core compared to real Sega Saturn hardware. Retro games console showdown! and I am sure I will do MiSTer FPGA vs emulation soon for Saturn! ...but today its Daytona USA time! and support Andy D : https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1464770493/gamers-4-dorkness-falls Sega Saturn on MiSTer FPGA is now on update all and while its still in beta there are still a ton of of best Sega Saturn games and Sega Saturn hidden gems to play! MiSTer FPGA Saturn core fun times! and the FPGA Core has been updated again! Bringing in some important fixes to some of the best Sega Saturn games! so let's do ANOTHER testing update video on the Sega Saturn FPGA core because why not! The ram controller has been rewritten and fixed up in dual updates! and as of today we have a new core that fixes a lot of the MiSTer FPGA Sega Saturn core bugs on VDP1 and VDP2 for games like Sega Rally, Tomb Raider and Panzer Dragoon Zwei! MiSTer FPGA review time! Just remember these TEST cores are not the same core you get in Update_All today! So let's do some more testing and show you some Sega Saturn widescreen content! now with more Nights into Dreams! and maybe soon a MiSTer FPGA vs emulation episode! and if you need a MiSTer FPGA guide I have them on the playlist 🙂 SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : http://www.patreon.com/VideoGameEsoterica I asked, you answered...and I try to listen 🙂 Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness. SRG320 just updated the Sega Saturn core with new code...AGAIN......so of course we are going to test the new binary and see how it performs. and now it's been folded into MiSTer Main and Update_all! Seriously...the improvements in performance and compatibility is a small retro gaming miracle! A LOT of games we tested previously have HUGE improvements and some new games work that never used to! and some games that STOPPED working on previous cores are now back and better than ever! Plus Burning Rangers has a seriously awesome improvement! and now we have new working games that never worked before as well! Amazing. This is a core testing video with user requests! So enjoy! This core fixes a massive ton of issues from the last Saturn core. Also make sure you update MiSTer main as there are some CD loading fixes in there that benefit Saturn! and now it seems like more people that have older RAM modules / the four chip ram module variants are seeing more success running the current Sega Saturn MiSTer FPGA core too! and game saves are here! MiSTer FPGA N64 Core Updates! Here's the Story on Conker's Bad Fur Day

Video Game Esoterica views juin 21, 2024 9:00 pm

SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : http://www.patreon.com/VideoGameEsoterica MiSTer FPGA just got an analog video upgrade with MiSTer Addons IO Analog Pro board, giving us 24-bit color out of cores that support the feature (MiSTer FPGA N64 core, MiSTer FPGA PSX core and MiSTer FPGA Saturn core) along with 99% reference quality accurate signals from real hardware to FPGA output! So let's do a MiSTer FPGA review and MiSTer FPGA build guide for this new and impressive piece of hardware! Find it here : https://misteraddons.com/products/mister-fpga-io-analog-pro Almost a year ago I did a SECOND tutorial video on how to use the Analog IO board on MiSTer FPGA to get crystal clear and amazing RGB signal into your PVM! But MiSTer moves fast and now we have RGB, VGA, component video, S-Video and composite video on MiSTer FPGA...which covers every format from a VGA monitor to a Sony PVM CRT to consumer CRT's...so I need to update the video one last time! To tell you why CRT gaming is important and how much fun MiSTer FPGA RGB video is! Because whether you are playing Neo Geo in FPGA, SNES in FPGA, Sega Genesis in FPGA, arcade cores in FPGA...ok seriously this list is too long...MiSTer FPGA analog video output is amazing and you should be enjoying it! BIG MiSTer FPGA Saturn Core Update is Out! Fixes All Around for Better Performance

Video Game Esoterica 3.4K views juin 17, 2024 9:00 pm

SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : http://www.patreon.com/VideoGameEsoterica Robert (or FPGAZumSpass) is doing with active development of the MiSTer FPGA N64 core, giving us 99% of a fully functioning Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA. Let's talk about what happened, when N64 will his MiSTer FPGA Update_All, the videos I have planned for the future and generally just celebrate the progress made on a Nintendo 64 FPGA Core! MiSTer FPGA review time! and if you need a MiSTer FPGA setup guide I have those on the playlists too! Note: this is the turbo core you already have from April but he ISNT done with the Turbo core as there is a brand new MiSTer FPGA N64 core that expands on the Turbo functionality and brings it in line feature set wise with the stock N64 FPGA core! and that means we can promote four non-working MiSTer FPGA games to WORKING on the turbo core! and now we have 480p on N64 with the newest test core from FPGAZumSpass...giving us 480p video output for Nintendo 64 on MiSTer FPGA! so its time for the first preview of MiSTer FPGA vs software emulation. The MiSTer FPGA N64 core and Ares Nintendo 64 emulator! The MiSTer N64 FPGA core was just updated and now TLB on N64 in FPGA is complete! A huge milestone for the Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA core is here! It's a huge day for MiSTer FPGA and N64 fans...because every single retail game ever released for the Nintendo 64 now boots on MiSTer FPGA! FPGA gaming is huge for retro gaming fans and today marks the 100% of MiSTer FPGA N64 games booting! Banjo Tooie came in...at least place! This is in addition to the N64 FPGA cor, bringing Killer Instinct Gold, Mario Golf, Twisted Edge Snowboarding, Super Mario 64 and Turok 2 to MiSTer FPGA for the first time! (ok just ONE part of Super Mario 64) and now Paper Mario, Castlevania 64, Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness, Bomberman 64, Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon and more! SUPPORT THE CHANNEL : http://www.patreon.com/VideoGameEsoterica A ton more working games and SRAM functionality to get some new games working as well! Plus PAL support from a few days ago! and now more RDP code that brought an entirely new batch of games to the core working for the first time! and some different visual modes were added to RDP today! including dithering! Oh and vanilla The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time now works on the N64 MiSTer FPGA core! You can find the core on the MiSTer FPGA Discord under test builds. and you no longer need Unstable MiSTer main to run the core! If you need a setup guide my previous Nintendo 64 MiSTer FPGA video has that so here you go: https://youtu.be/vBJUx7kCEmg I asked, you answered...and I try to listen 🙂 Of all the requests for new content on the channel one of the most frequently asked for videos is a series on the Terasic DE-10 Nano MiSTer FPGA hardware...so here it is! Retro gaming goodness. On this episode of our MiSTer series we are going to be talking about the recent happenings in the MiSTer FPGA scene in regards to the potential of a Nintendo 64 core for MiSTer FPGA! Nobody saw it coming...and it was long considered an "impossible core" but perhaps Nintendo's first 3D console might be coming to MiSTer soon! Which would be amazing as there are a ton of great games for it and software emulation, while much improved, is still a bit hit or miss. Plus modding a N64 for HDMI out is expensive and VERY difficult! But after the PS1 core on MiSTer (developed by Robert as well) and the PSX 2X core…nobody should doubt his talents! and when it comes out just play Bomberman Hero, the N64 hidden gem of choice around this channel! Quick comparison of 240p120Hz vs 240p60Hz / CRT TV vs PC CRT / 15kHz vs 31kHz for 240p content **This seems to be a highly debated topic** LOL I say try 240p 120Hz on a PC CRT for yourself and dont just negate this option by all the negative "nasty motion blur" comments. I understand going from 60Hz to 120Hz is doubling each frame and technically creating a strobing motion artifact....... Do I see it or does it bother me?...... No I think alot of people are just parroting that it will look like crap and havent tried it on MiSTer with these settings, cause thats exactly what I was doing just a few days ago before I tried it. Maybe youve tried it in the past on retroarch on PC and maybe didnt have integer scaling on which caused issues. Everyone is saying the motion blur artifact or double frame strobe affect cannot be seen in recorded video I can definitely see something in this video here that I took.... https://youtu.be/eVNPwl-OstQ Maybe its not the actual strobing/blur artifact of doubling 60Hz to 120Hz seen in the recorded video but you can definitely see the negative motion artifact represented. So in this comparison video of MiSTer on a PC CRT at 240p 120Hz and a supergrafx running the same content on a 15kHz consumer CRT in the same room ,same conditions, same camera..... Any motion artifacts caught in the recording are on par with eachother... https://youtu.be/b0bu4RPOJiA Now I understand a camera capturing at 60fps is not going to resolve an issue of every frame being drawn twice in 120Hz on the PC CRT but to my eyes its nothing I notice or am bothered by. May it bother some.... Sure! I dont wear glasses and have perfect vision and am even susceptible to seeing studder in VR if fps drop under 90. Im just saying dont brush this option off due to all the negative comments without seeing for yourself because thats what I did for the longest and now its the only way I will play mister on a PC CRT. Is it the "end all be all" way to play mister......? probably not. Im very picky with input lag and there is a small amount present..... But after trying all the other video mode options on a PC CRT this is by far the best tradeoff and looks amazing!!!.....to me When I think of a CRT I think of that nice phosphor "crt glow" and every other option on a PC CRT with scanlines dimmed the screen too much to the point that I would rather play on my 4k lcd in 5x scaling or on one of my consumer 15kHz crt tv's but once I tried 240p 120Hz on this PC 31kHz CRT.... Its easily the best image ive seen yet out of the mister or on any crt for that matter so if I was stuck with a PC CRT as the only CRT I owned, I would be playing in this 120Hz mode and be completely happy. Maybe you wont agree but I scoffed at this option as well just a few days ago untill I actually tried it. Everybody has preferences and opinions, All I can say is try it and see what you think. Try it and see if you are bothered by any blurring artifact, for me....not at all

When I think of a CRT I think of that nice phosphor "crt glow" and every other option on a PC CRT with scanlines dimmed the screen too much to the point that I would rather play on my 4k lcd in 5x scaling or on one of my consumer 15kHz crt tv's but once I tried 240p 120Hz on this PC 31kHz CRT....

**This seems to be a highly debated topic** LOL

I say try 240p 120Hz on a PC CRT for yourself and dont just negate this option by all the negative "nasty motion blur" comments.
I understand going from 60Hz to 120Hz is doubling each frame and technically creating a strobing motion artifact.......
Do I see it or does it bother me?...... No

I think alot of people are just parroting that it will look like crap and havent tried it on MiSTer with these settings, cause thats exactly what I was doing just a few days ago before I tried it. Maybe youve tried it in the past on retroarch on PC and maybe didnt have integer scaling on which caused issues.

Everyone is saying the motion blur artifact or double frame strobe affect cannot be seen in recorded video
I can definitely see something in this video here that I took....

Maybe its not the actual strobing/blur artifact of doubling 60Hz to 120Hz seen in the recorded video but you can definitely see the negative motion artifact represented.

Now I understand a camera capturing at 60fps is not going to resolve an issue of every frame being drawn twice in 120Hz on the PC CRT but to my eyes its nothing I notice or am bothered by.

**Please watch in full 1440p/60 quality!** First video for the official release N64 core! I recently hosted a time trial competition for Wave Race 64 in the MiSTerFPGA Discord and wanted to record a playthrough also. Videos have been rather slow to release lately and will continue to be for a while, as my weekly schedule doesn't leave much time for gaming currently. I'll try and post videos when I can and have a lot of them planned still! Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com Wave Race is still awesome after all these years, and as punishing as ever! I used the Saffun N64 USB controller that you can buy on Amazon for this run, but don't recommend them for any games that require the d-pad, as it has severe malfunctions on both of the ones I ordered and presses multiple directions at a time if you hold any direction down, with anything but the lightest touch. The analog stick and buttons feel great though, so for most of the N64 library it will work perfectly fine. **PLEASE WATCH IN FULL 1440p/60 QUALITY.** Continued from part 1: https://youtu.be/WFIQWOuAY4M English translation v1.1 by Deuce: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7113/ This patch has been in the making for over a decade now and its great to see it finally reach a completed state. Like the first part of this playthrough, I start with the "Versus" input mode. I switch to "Menu" input mode quickly though & recommend using this instead (explained below.) Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com First- why you should use the Menu input method: Versus input is wonky in this. You'll start to get so many moves that they won't all show up in the battle menu so you basically have to memorize which ones you have learned. When you get super/desperation attacks, they require pressing all 4 buttons at the same time, and one of those buttons is the "cancel" button that stops your attack, which will result in these often not working. On top of this, the Menu input method will show you which enemies will be hit by multiple-target attacks, and the Versus style completely lacks this so you just feel like you're rolling the dice with many attacks. Save yourself some frustration and use Menu input instead- or maybe just use Versus input for the early portion of the game before you unlock desperation attacks, since you can switch at any time. Tips: - *Hold* d-pad left in Versus input mode to select your team for healing moves. - Hold the C button to charge your POW meter in battle- especially helpful before boss fights! - When the POW bar fills, you get three actions until it resets. This includes skipping turns, running from battle, or any selection. Desperation attacks instantly reset the bar- try to use them last! Be sure to only use 2X CD speed for this one. The game may crash at parts and not boot properly if it is set higher than that. Such beautiful artwork & animation throughout this one, and an awesome soundtrack. Fun to play through for that aspect alone, and plenty of replay value with the varied scenarios for each character & different team compositions. The Neo Geo core was mostly made by Furrtek, who decapped the chips of the console to gain a new understanding of how the system works, resulting in the excellent MiSTer core you see today.

Tips:
- *Hold* d-pad left in Versus input mode to select your team for healing moves.

MiSTer FPGA - Samurai Shodown RPG [Chapter 1, Part 2 & Omake w/ Eng translation v1.1] / Neo Geo CD

**PLEASE WATCH IN FULLSCREEN @ 1440p!** Darius Gaiden on Saturn is a phenomenal port of this arcade gem. The biggest difference is the way colors were transferred. Everything is overly bright and as a result many stages look completely wrong (stage 1, for example.) I tried to compensate for this with the use of *very* heavy polynomial gamma correction here. This helps things considerably but still is not accurate to arcade. Saturn BETA core also has a click at the start of CD audio tracks. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com If you've ever played this game in arcades or seen capture footage from an actual PCB, it's pretty easy to tell that something is off with the graphics in this port. Arcade emulators had issues with this as well. The first stage is a great example, and the reference point for how I balanced things because it is so awkward-looking compared to the original arcade version. The pillars are supposed to blend in to the dark background & ground, and give the appearance of flying through an eerie cityscape that is being invaded. With the brightened graphics, the pillars in the back have this distinct grey outline and look like they're detached from the surface instead of achieving this blend. I applied gamma correction until this suitably blended in like the original. The downside of such heavy gamma correction is that many darker shades of color will blend in with each-other, so it is ultimately a destructive process to the image once you go above ~2.5 for most games. I used 2.9 for this one, so it will certainly have this effect, but is still much closer to the arcade's visuals as a result. **WATCH IN 1440p/60** Part 2: https://youtu.be/enWUdjOu5f4 Eng translation v1.1 by Deuce: https://www.romhacking.net/translations/7113/ Finally getting a chance to play Samurai Spirits RPG thanks to the recently released patch! This patch has been in the making for over a decade now and its great to see it finally completed. I'm using the "Versus" input mode which requires fighting game inputs for special moves, but recommend using "Menu" mode (explained below.) Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com First- why you should use the Menu input method: Versus input is wonky in this. You'll start to get so many moves that not all will even show up in the battle menu so you basically have to memorize all the ones you have learned. When you get super/desperation attacks, they require pressing all 4 buttons at the same time, and one of those buttons is the "cancel" button that stops your attack, which will result in these often not working. MiSTer FPGA - Samurai Shodown RPG [Chapter 1, Part 1 w/ Eng translation v1.1] / Neo Geo CD

MiSTer Walrus FPGA 391 views mars 20, 2024 10:34 pm

*1440p/60* Fate of Atlantis has many considerations to take into account to get the game running without issues, and with the best quality audio. Use my recommended settings for MiSTer FPGA (listed below and shown at the start of the video), or keep on reading further to learn why you'll want to go with specific settings listed here. Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com First off, the game needs to be run at a slower speed to work correctly. If you have the DOS PC/core/emulator running too quickly, many issues can and will arise. The iMUSE music system can break entirely and go silent at parts, certain MIDI channels can slow down over time and produce incorrect notes, and the game itself has various issues at higher speeds. 386-25MHZ seemed to be the sweet spot here. Higher speeds also make digital voices sound more aliased and staticky, for some reason. Even with the CPU set to a slow enough speed, there are still bugs in the game you'll want to watch out for. I encountered a bug at the second-to-last room in the game because I didn't wait for Sophia to finish entering the scene before I started the lava puzzle. Luckily I had test saves and just had to go through the Atlantis section again to splice the video together there, but without that I probably would have given up trying to record this video. This was my 4th attempt at recording a full video, with two of them encountering MIDI issues, and another with a capture card noise issue that started appearing near the end of the game. This was frustrating to record, and in the end I had to settle with a spliced video in the lava room. I also added a bonus scene showing one of the many deaths you can encounter in the game, which is quite a rarity for LucasArts. I like the variation of the theme they played in the death screen so I let it play for a while at the end. For best results try and stick with "Variable" timing in the core (70hz) if possible, since the game is very touchy already and may even have issues when limited to 60hz. The recommended music for this one is the Roland CM-32L. Choose that option on the mt32-pi or in MUNT on an emulator. It's quiet by default, so I recommend using the ] & [ keys in-game to change MIDI volume. (set two below max in this video) Roland MT-32/CM-32L music is presented in this video via the excellent mt32-pi project by Dale Whinham: https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi ▶️ Monkey Island 1 Ultimate Talkie Edition on MiSTer: https://youtu.be/iigEOKdjHSQ ▶️ Monkey Island 2 Ultimate Talkie Edition on MiSTer: https://youtu.be/TvULhLvfQIQ The AO486 core was brought to MiSTer by Sorg & considerably improved by FPGAzumSpass, whom also brought us the N64, PlayStation, GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Gameboy and NES cores. Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com

First off, the game needs to be run at a slower speed to work correctly.

(set two below max in this video)

Roland MT-32/CM-32L music is presented in this video via the excellent mt32-pi project by Dale Whinham: https://github.com/dwhinham/mt32-pi

(1440p/60) THAT IS GALACTIC DANCING! I cleared this my first time recently for a MiSTer FPGA Discord challenge I hosted. The first clear was streamed on Twitch but unfortunately had some frame drops & buffering on the final stage and boss. This video is my second clear for the game, also in better quality than the Twitch stream. This is an excellent follow-up to the original Galaga and well worth checking out on TurboGrafx/PC Engine! Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? Great quality kits, parts & support at https://www.MiSTerAddons.com There is also an X68000 port of this game I plan on trying in the future. It'll be interesting to see any differences and enhancements over this version and also compare it to the arcade original. MiSTer's PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. After finally making it through Dangerous Dave 2 in yesterday's video, I took on Slordax for the DOScember MiSTer Discord challenge to try and finally get to the ending. Didn't realize the game loops afterwards and forces a faster speed setting than the first loop. Also interesting were the loop-2 large boss enemies seeming to have glitchy graphics, but after checking other videos it seems that is the intended behavior. Makes for a much more confusing fight with the constant sprite swapping! Looking to get into MiSTer FPGA? First time clearing Dangerous Dave 2! Played for the DOScember MiSTer Discord challenge I'm hosting, along with Slordax- another early iD software release. Judder during title scrolling is due to playing in original 70hz mode and recording 60fps. The challenge here gets pretty ridiculous, especially in stages 5 through 7.
