MiSTer FPGA – Addams Family Values / SNES (Super Famicom)

I have played many Addams family games in the past couple weeks to see if any of them are good, and this is the first one that I liked enough to recommend besides Fester’s Quest on NES. Surprisingly, this one is a Zelda clone of sorts, and a refreshing departure from the stale platformers that Ocean seems to have been suck making over and over again previously.

You take the role of Uncle Fester on a quest to locate the lost baby, Pubert. Fester attacks with a lightning bolt that annoyingly gets shorter and less powerful as you take more damage. Which leads me into my next topic: difficulty. This one can be punishingly tough, especially if you don’t take your time with new areas/rooms. Rushing in not only will likely damage you, but you will have the aforementioned weaker attack as a result of this, which can often times have a snowball effect. Luckily health items are not very difficult to come by, and one of the NPC characters in the game will give you a replenishable supply of recovery and even invincibility items. Careful use of these to get past especially difficult sections can be a crucial part of getting anywhere in this game, as you progress.

I recommend giving this game a try, not only for the gameplay but also the often times funny dialogue between the characters. There is a savegame system, but only one character in the game allows you to do this, and I suggest seeking them out in the Eastern Swamps as soon as possible, so you can pick up where you left off in multiple sessions. The game also has infinite continues, but will probably take too long to play through in one sitting so seeking out that character is an important step, once you unlock that eastern area, not too far into the game. You can go there as soon as you give the black rose to Morticia (don’t give it to the plant that sends you looking for it- you’ll miss a permanent health stat increase if you do.)
