MiSTer FPGA – After Burner III [30th Anniversary Music Hack] / Sega CD (Mega CD)

Replaces the music with some After Burner-inspired tunes from “Sky Magnifique”. https://skymagnifique.bandcamp.com – Overall it’s a good soundtrack for the game, with a distinct 80’s vibe. Tracks switch up enough during gameplay that it doesn’t get too annoying or repetitive. You’ll need to play the higher difficulty levels to hear it all though, as the game limits how far you can go when playing on Easy. Some choices seem a bit odd, like the strafing (ground) mission music, but for the most part it fits in well with the action and theme.

There is a MSU-MD version of After Burner II that got the same soundtrack. I had some issues running it in the current MiSTer core though. MSU-MD is a somewhat recent feature of the core, so there are some kinks to be worked out, no doubt. Currently the music is way too loud compared to SFX and there are horizontal glitchy lines during gameplay.

The controls in this game are strange. Everything feels fine at first, until you need to dodge missiles and this is where the gameplay falls apart. It just isn’t intuitive or fun trying to guess which way you need to dodge them, because they all look like they do the same damn thing, even when coming from different directions. Because of this you’ll just find yourself moving around in random directions trying to dodge, and often coming out of those evasive maneuvers to be greeted head-first with an oncoming missile.

Because the controls are so random feeling by default, I decided to try something different here, and hooked up a PC Flight Stick (Thrustmaster T.16000m) to play the game, with all controls mapped to the appropriate locations. This made the game much more fun than just trying to randomly guess missile dodge directions with a d-pad. It doesn’t feel any less controllable than the default setup, and actually gets you engaged in the action a bit more when doing barrel rolls, etc. This, in combination with the music, kept me playing longer than I normally would for this game, so I consider it a nice upgrade to the somewhat-mediocre stock experience. It great that you can plug pretty much any oddball USB controller/PC-peripheral in, and it just works with no fuss on Sega CD. All other MiSTer cores as well. It’s still digital controls mapped to the stick since the game never had analog, but like I said before- it doesn’t feel like a hindrance in a game that already has you slopping all over the place anyways. ^-^
