MiSTer FPGA – Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams (コットン) [1cc] / PC Engine CD (TurboGrafx-CD)

Following up from my 1cc on the arcade version (https://youtu.be/NIcVLu4oZIk) I decided to give the PC Engine CD port another try, after getting as far as the 5th stage boss in my previous attempt a year ago (https://youtu.be/xZSVR6FH6U8). It seems most of this game is a bit easier than the arcade original, except the Stage 6 boss who is ridiculous in this version, giving you hardly any room to dodge his attacks. I was lucky to make it through to the final boss, who is also a bit more difficult than the arcade version, but not much. They added a final tea time bonus section at the end after the boss fight also, which felt great to nail for the 20k bonus at the end of this run. The bonus sections seem a bit more difficult in this version to dodge everything successfully.

I like how in this version the default scoreboard says BIG COT TON HUD SON with the top score being 46280, a nod to the CPU in the PC Engine (HuC6280). Similarly, the default high score in the arcade version is 68000 to represent the Motorola 68000 CPU in the Sega System 16 hardware, with the default scoreboard saying BIG COT TON PAN TSU which always gives me a chuckle.

There is a USA release of this game for the Turbografx-CD, but it is inferior to the JP release since it doesn’t have the voiced cutscenes, and you can just set the text language to English by pressing Select on the title screen in the JP version.

The translation is superior to arcade here, and notably there are color enhancements and additional animation frames on some enemies. In most other areas it is a downgrade graphically though. Gameplay takes a hit unfortunately, with far less enemies and shots on the screen at once and nearly-useless faeries that just seem to go in random directions most of the time when you shoot them forward.
I hear the X68000 version has further enhancements and look forward to trying that in the near future.
