**NOTE** – For best result PLEASE WATCH FULLSCREEN IN 1080p60 QUALITY. This video uses advanced filtering which may cause excessive noise on any other display setting! Please read further in the description below if you would like to know more about my video filtering choices.
This video is the longest I have spent on visual calibration for a single game since I started this channel. FF IX means a lot to me & was a game I purchased on the day it released, hyped from reading about the return to the classic FF style after the wild departure in VIII (which overshadowed the direction the series would take as a whole..)
I’ve been using the Final Fantasy series to learn the new filters and shadow masks on MiSTer; spending many weeks recording footage to upload filter tests in various scenes to youtube and see how the re-encoding on their side would handle it. I played to Lindblum (~4 hrs into the game) each time for these filter tests, and compared specific scenes along the way to dial in what I felt worked best for the many varied elements of FF9’s visual presentation. From the highly detailed background « field » graphics, to menus and text, card minigame, battles and magic effects and even the introduction titles to new areas and various fonts they’re presented in. All of that is taken into account to try and blend the graphics properly here, in a combination that draws from the strengths of both CRT and modern digital displays. Calibrating to a single scene leaves too much out in a game like this & I feel the smaller integer scale benefits the artwork greatly here.
It takes a lot of trial and error to see what will work with YouTube’s strict 1080p encoder regarding scanlines and shadow masks. For these kinds of experiments I upload lossless video, and this one was nearly 70GB! These take me over 12 hours to upload on my rural internet connection, and this makes experimentation a very time-consuming process. Even with all that work, it’s impossible to capture in a video how good I can get the game looking, with the recent filter advancements on MiSTer. It’s undoubtedly the best I’ve seen PS1 looking on a modern display.

Please try these settings for yourself to experience them, and experiment a little to see how great this game looks in its original form. Feel free to comment here with any questions and suggestions, or reach out on Discord/Twitter! I’d love to hear what kinds of filter recipes folks are coming up with for these visually dense and stunning PS1 games.
