** NOTE ** This video was made when the PS1 core did not have CD audio implemented yet! CD audio was added just a couple days after posting this, and I’ve since recorded an updated video for G-Darius on PS1 with the soundtrack intact: https://youtu.be/IqwkIRsBqUk
After an unplanned month-long hiatus on new videos, my first for 2022 is a preview of what’s to come this year to MiSTer- 32-bit console gaming! This is the first home port of G-Darius from arcades, which IMO is one of the greatest SHMUP/STG games of all-time. Taito made a graceful transition to 3D for Darius in this landmark title, and the results were simply stunning for their time and hold up wonderfully today as well.
CD music support is not in the core yet, but will be added very soon from the looks of things! I was hesitant to put this video out with how quickly that seems to be coming, but I just had to show off the core with this lovely bit of early 3D work by Taito, so the epic Zuntata soundtrack for this game will have to wait for a follow-up video unfortunately. That video will be ready very soon after CD audio support is added- the soundtrack is just too damn good here.
Unfortunately the game taxes the PSX hardware a bit hard at times and results in a ton of slowdown throughout the game, but it is still a very fun experience- especially now being able to play it on MiSTer FPGA finally!
Another thing I have to mention is the ending videos in this port- they are in *terrible* quality because they were converted to MPEG video from the original in-engine graphics. The result looks like someone pointed a 1996 video camera at a CRT and recorded. Reminiscent of what you would see with Sega CD FMV- just a really bad conversion with tons of noise.
The PlayStation core was created by FPGAzumSpass, whom previously brought us the GBA, Lynx and WonderSwan cores, along with enhancements to the Game Boy and NES cores, and significantly improved performance in the AO486 core.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
