MiSTer FPGA – Race Drivin’ [SA-1] / SNES (Super Famicom)

SA-1 Origin Speed Fix Patch (v1.1) by Vitor Vilela: https://github.com/VitorVilela7/SA1-Root
Combo video with patched and regular game to show the massive difference in performance. Comparison point – Original: 18:31 || SA-1 Origin: 7:31
Race Drivin’ isn’t a particularly good game. In fact, this console port is one of the worst games I’ve ever played. It loses everything about what makes the arcade original entertaining, namely the controls. It just isn’t satisfying at all playing this with a normal controller. The second « turd in the punchbowl » you’ll quickly discover here, is that there’s a combined total of less than 10 minutes of content in this one. As a game it’s a total failure, but it is still a good showcase for the massive improvements that Vitor has been making with his SA-1 patches.

At the beginning of the video I play all three courses with the SA-1 Origin patch, and then switch to the normal game version to demonstrate the huge difference in performance between the two. As you can see, the improvement is simply night-and-day. It doesn’t quite make this a good game by any stretch of the imagination, but it is far easier to control as a result of the smoother presentation. Things feel much snappier and more responsive as a result. Makes me wonder what might be possible in a fully optimized version of something like Star Fox or Stunt Race FX. I know those are SuperFX games, but if there were a way to do something similar, it would be truly awesome. Currently when using hacks/overclocks on those games, there are issues like the entire gameplay logic speeding up and music going out of key.

Vitor Vilela is the author of the SA-1 speedfix patches/romhacks for SNES, and has made progress on many games already! So far he’s worked on Gradius 3, Super R-Type, Contra 3, and others. This work is what I like to refer to as a « proper SNES remaster », making classics from the SNES library feel much better and eliminate some notorious cases of slowdown that hindered games on the platform for decades now. Some of these hacks will IMO be the definitive version to play, going forward. Some games were unintentionally made more difficult than they should be because they speed up elements they should not, like bosses in Gradius III. Because of this, a special « SA-1 Origin » version was made to retain the normal speeds, and correct these issues with the original patches. I recommend playing these versions instead of the earlier releases, so that game logic is not negatively impacted.
