This is one of my favorite newly-discovered games on MiSTer. It’s actually the last official release for GBA, in 2006. A couple people in Discord mentioned this one, and I finally gave it a try a few weeks back and found it definitely lives up to the hype. This is a unique and charming game that really benefits from the core strengths of MiSTer as a retro gaming platform. Timing needs to be precise, and will punish even slight missteps. Played on a CRT with an super-fast USB arcade stick & 1000hz polling, it is an absolute joy.
This is one of those rare games where you can actually feel *very* slight variations in the latency of the controller used. You will find yourself having to compensate more, with devices that have greater lag. For this reason, I recommend consulting Porkchop Express’ Controller Latency Chart: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1KlRObr3Be4zLch7Zyqg6qCJzGuhyGmXaOIUrpfncXIM/
Just pick the quickest option you have, that you feel would be a comfortable match for the game’s controls. I like using an 8-button arcade stick because I can bind the d-pad directions to buttons on the front of the stick alongside the standard four GBA buttons. This makes for a very comfortable play experience, and opens up new possibilities for the drum studio and feels more intuitive for some of the minigames as well. I love that they let your record your drum sessions if you want, and included some sessions/patterns that I recorded previously, later in the video. (See timestamps/chapters)
When you’re done playing the minigames and studio sessions, there is a Rhythm Test that will have you try to hold a beat consistently in three different scenarios. This is not easy at first, but becomes more manageable over time as you familiarize yourself with the rhythm. For some reason, the third test when they bring in the music track, seems hard to follow for me. Usually I score 80-85 in the test, but was a bit worn out after nearly an hour of the mini-games. I started doing worse in the third series of minigames also, but still passed them all at least.
This game is an absolute blast. Whether you’re a casual player who wants to try something new and unique, or a hardened FGC veteran looking to keep their timing and reflexes sharp, this game has something to offer everyone IMO.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
