MiSTer FPGA – Spacegulls / NES (Famicom)

Game information & ROM purchasedownload link: https://morphcatgames.itch.io/spacegulls
Made by Morphcat Games, the same devs who made Micro Mages and Böbl, this game started out as an entry for the NESDev Competition in 2020/21. The original version of this was made in a week for the competition and won first place.

Gameplay is, as described, like a cross between Joust and Mega Man. It’s a short game, but with very thoughtfully crafted rooms along the way that ramp up in difficulty. The game seemed a bit on the easy side to me, and if there is ever a longer game made of this concept, I hope they raise the difficulty or give an option. There is a two-player mode also, which I look forward to trying in the future. I found two secrets in the game. The final room will show them along with the credits, much like Böbl.

The homebrew community has a lot to offer for fans of classic NES gaming. The extents that they push the hardware in different ways is still fascinating to me. Check out the NESDev community forums for other developments and homebrew magic: http://forums.nesdev.com/

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
