MiSTer FPGA – Valkyrie no Bōken: Toki no Kagi Densetsu / Famicom (NES)

The first game in the Valkyrie series is maddeningly difficult, cryptic, and often random in its difficulty. Even with the English patch (https://www.romhacking.net/translations/1378/) it will confuse the hell out of you without a guide. I tried for weeks now to record a solid run for this game, which probably wasn’t helped by the fact I used the AB blood type selection which gives you randomized leveling on top of all this.

Even after using save states to practice the more difficult areas first, it is still a complete crap shoot as to how difficult an area will be, mainly based on what enemy spawns (and how many of them) you get. I barely squeaked my way through this run, coming literally a frame away from death at times when I healed up.

I also had to keep a notepad handy to remind myself how many inventory slots to have open for the next area and other small things that can completely block your progress if you don’t stay on top of them. There is no way to drop items, so if you accidentally pick one up it may require a detour to a shop to progress.

If you plan on playing this game, the following resources are *very* handy- especially the StrategyWiki guide which is essentially a manual for the game and overview of all it’s areas. It helps a lot to know where the hidden items are, since you need your gold for healing up at inns more than anything else and it costs a lot when you have higher health.

Here’s the original Japanese television ad for the game:

Robotic CG dinosaurs? Why the hell not. 😂

And lastly here’s my playthrough of the sequel (Valkyrie no Densetsu) on PC Engine:

5x integer scaling/crop was used for this video. It results in a couple lines being cut from the top of the image vs what would be seen on a CRT with overscan usually, but is a fair trade for the increase in screen size while maintaining an integer stretch here. Gameplay is not hindered by this in any way.
