MiSTer FPGA – Creepy Brawlers / NES (Famicom)

Finishing off my series of Halloween videos for 2021 with a more-recent indie NES game. If you’ve ever enjoyed Mike Tyson’s Punch Out or Wade Hixton’s Counter Punch, then this will feel right at home for you. Each encounter plays out like a game of memory where you learn the enemies attack patterns and what gives you the best opening to land punches. In this one you’ll find the goal is generally counterattacking from successful dodges. Only a couple of the fights actually let you exploit openings without relying on counters.

An element I liked in this one is the training mode, which lets you face the opponent who last took you out in the championship mode. This is much quicker than having to go through the earlier fights in the series over and over again to get to them again. Very thoughtful and useful implementation of this mode here. There are also achievements, if that’s your thing.

Game by Mega Cat Studios. You may know them from one of their other varied games on different platforms, including Old Towers for Genesis/Mega Drive.

You can purchase this game as a NES or Famicom cart directly from Mega Cat, or get the demo ROM here:
Creepy Brawlers

Unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be a ROM purchase option anywhere, so you’ll have to dump the game from cart or obtain the ROM image from the Nintendo Switch version if possible.

Happy Halloween! Be safe, amigos.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
