I owned the follow-up to this on Saturn but never put much time in the original until now. Decided to try and learn a new character and go for a 1cc this week. Rikuo is pretty fun and has a lot of high-pressure attacks and counters. I found for the bosses, non-stop pressure is the way to go. If you let up on them at all and let them get some distance from you, it will just be non-stop explosive projectiles. Spamming Rikuo’s HP worked the best for Pyron, who I had a bunch of problems working out strategies to take out until landing on the constant-pressure strat. Worked my way up the lower difficulties until I eventually was able to get a 1cc on difficulty level 3. Still lots of room to improve- timing for combos and the follow-up to Rikuo’s throw in particular are things I still struggle with. Also consistently doing the back-dash was something I had trouble with, often feeling like it required tapping back three times to be consistent. This might be due to the speed I picked, as I didn’t notice as much issues with it on lower speed. His HP can be confusing also, as it awkwardly throws his uppercut and I often found myself trying to do a more direct/forward attack and getting the uppercut instead. His HK is a very good and long-reaching forward strike, including when crouched.
This game unfortunately has some issues even on original hardware. Playing at Turbo 2 or Turbo 3 speeds makes the graphics glitch out in various ways. Turbo 1 provides the cleanest presentation here, if that’s important to you. Control seems like it may have slight issues at higher Turbo speeds also, specifically the reliability of backdash moves I noticed. When using Turbo2 I had to tap back three times instead of the normal two, to do these consistently.
