Doom Resurrection romhack: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/6269/ (v1.5 used in video)
Compared to the original release on 32X, this seems like an upgrade in every possible way. The D32XR Team have done an awesome job with this hack. There’s room for improvement in some areas, but I’ll get into that later.
The increased resolution allows you to easier see further away targets and generally makes for a more pleasant and cohesive image than the default low-res mode. One of the biggest benefits is that it removes the vertical stripe dithering that’s used in the low-res modes. It’s bordered when in high-res, but I don’t think its a huge issue considering the detail you get in exchange. Even on CRT I preferred this mode more than any others. The original game was bordered by default also, so no loss. You can maximize your screen usage by using 5x integer scaling when in hi-res bordered mode, as I am doing in this video. The only side-effect is the top row of pixels missing from the title, and a single line out of place at the top during the intro credit roll. Hardly any time is spent on those screens so I think this is a fair trade. +4 offset is used so that the entire status bar appears at the bottom. Otherwise, it would cut off part of keycards, etc. and look messy.
Next gotta talk about the music! What a treat, especially compared to those drab and muffled conversions that were done for the original version. Great work here by Spoony Bard! I played a couple levels past the end of episode 1 just to hear a couple more of his renditions of this classic soundtrack, and also to die in style like Romero intended 😁 (the last stage was a nod to the classic demo from the original DOS release.)

Concerning control options, this hack has exactly what you’ll need for fluid gameplay on a gamepad. I used a Saturn controller in this run because it seemed like the perfect fit, being the ultimate evolution of the Sega 6-button design along with L/R bumper buttons which are incredibly handy in this game. Map those to strafe in the options.
Room for improvement:
– Campaign progression seems broken. In the original you started off fresh in each episode, so the challenge was weighted for this. Maps like E2M2 are very different as a result.
– Seems like the same weapon sprites are used for all display resolutions. If possible, the overall image quality seems like it would significantly improve if higher resolution weapon sprites were used, considering you are always looking at a weapon while playing.
The Genesis 32X core was made by srg320, whom previously made the SNES, PC Engine CD and Sega CD cores. He is currently bringing the Sega Saturn to MiSTer as well.
