MiSTer FPGA – Moon Patrol (ムーンパトロール) / Irem M-52 Arcade [PB: 118,760]

Moon Patrol was one of the first arcade games I remember getting hooked on, along with Ghosts ‘n Goblins. Gameplay is fairly simple here, with a unique mash-up of shooting and platforming that always stood out to me in arcades. The game features the first use of full parallax scrolling, with simple controls to speed up or slow down your patrol buggy along with standard fire and jump buttons. Williams brought this Irem classic to the west with some great flyer artwork that I threw together for the intro wallpaper. A bit of the text is cut off at the top but I didn’t want to resize and lose any quality in the image.

Having a lag free way to play this was one of the reasons I originally got MiSTer in the first place late in 2018, along with the just-announced SNES core. Unfortunately there has been a sound issue where the music would cut out about 5 minutes after starting, usually leaving behind an annoying hanging tone. The core just got a fix for this a couple weeks ago, so I figured it was a good time to record a video for it. This is my current personal-best with 1 credit, making it to the W stage of the Champion course. It’s almost what I would consider a 1cc of the game, since the Champion course just repeats infinitely after you complete it. I’ll definitely be revisiting this in the future to try and attain that goal, and for further high scores after that.

The Intellivision Amico is supposedly getting a new version of this game, if it ever releases. It’s the only thing that interests me about that system currently, besides watching the hilarious fumbling that Tommy Tallirico is doing with PR.
