MiSTer FPGA – Skidmarks & Super Skidmarks [All Tracks & Hi-Res mode] / Amiga

I wasn’t happy with the janky car visuals in yesterday’s two-player video for Super Skidmarks +, so I decided to record the games with their proper visuals in single player mode for a session after posting that video. In doing so I discovered what may be the single worst « Championship » mode ever introduced in a racing game. The original game is fine in that regard, but in the follow-up it is so terribly implemented that I wonder why it was even made. The only somewhat-enjoyable Championship events are the « Muscle » and « California Cow » options.

The cars go way to fast in most championships and have an entirely broken point structure that shouldn’t even exist. I say this because the only way to actually progress through the races is to place in 1st for each one, thus negating the point system entirely. Even if you get 2nd place you have to restart the same race over and over again until you get 1st. This is an infuriating crap-shoot that is completely dependent on if you can get around the blockade of 7 cars in front of you since you always start in last place. Just awful design.

Otherwise, these are solid top-down isometric racers- very reminiscent of the Super Off-Road arcade game, and support up to 8 players in multiplayer mode!

The menus/UI are very poorly made, especially in the second game. The original game has some real head-scratchers too though, like needing to hit either the left mouse button or the action button on the controller to choose between the two sets of maps you can race on.

If you want to play with the zoomed in view (Lo-Res mode), then I suggest sticking with the original game, since there is some terrible black striped interlaced-looking graphics on the cars in the updated versions. Hi-Res (bird’s eye) mode is only available in the later versions and luckily does not have this issue.

There are a good number of tracks and vehicles in the game that give it some decent replay value. Just remember to stick to the original game for single player championship races, or choose the « Grunty » option in the car select screen for Super Skidmarks and stick to individual races or multiplayer there.

If anyone has some recommendations for Amiga games to try (both single and two-player) please leave a comment below. My gaming buddy loves classic computers and Atari consoles so that’s generally what we spend time with when he visits. He also never had any exposure to the Amiga, but it’s a system we would both like to explore further.
