Playing the new 32X core release on MiSTer is a bittersweet experience. It’s great to experience games like Virtua Racing Deluxe for the first time, but sad that the events that led up to its release are so dire. The core’s developer srg320 is a Ukrainian citizen and has been working on both this core and the Saturn core even while Russian troops have been attacking and occupying his country. This core was released early because of how uncertain things are currently, with both power and internet being knocked out in his region for a while now. It’s relieving to hear recently that he is okay, but as the days pass between communications it always gets more worrisome. There isn’t much we can do to help the situation he is in currently, but if you would like to contribute to his patreon, here is a link: https://www.patreon.com/srg320
About the game- it’s the best version of Virtua Racing on MiSTer by a long shot, and includes some unique additions like a much-needed set of new stages and multiple cars to choose from. I had a lot of fun re-visiting this to test the new core out over the weekend, and got confident enough in a solid run to record some footage today finally. I wanted to show multiple views of Virtua Racing’s environments as rendered by the 32X, so each stage shows both the distant and in-car views for at least a lap. I made sure to get the top-down view on at least one lap during replays also. Learning the new stages was fun, though the last one has a particularly tricky section I still struggle with. Both new tracks are worthy additions to the original trio and are really the stand-out feature of this port. 5x integer scaling works perfectly and is used in this video.
Compared to the Genesis release (with the SVP chip), the 32X version sports a higher resolution with more-faithful stages and increased render distance, and features a slightly better framerate as well. I used a Saturn controller in this run, because much like in the Genesis version it feels perfect here.

If you’d like to see the game without scanlines, I recorded a segment with only interpolation/gamma at the end: 51:58
The Genesis 32X core was made by srg320, whom previously made the SNES, PC Engine CD and Sega CD cores. He is currently bringing the Sega Saturn to MiSTer as well.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
NOTE: I am not affiliated with Sorgelig and am only sharing these links as a fan of the project who wishes to see it continue to grow rapidly.
