MiSTer FPGA – Valkyrie no Densetsu (ワルキューレの伝説) / PC Engine (Turbografx-16)

Legend of Valkyrie is a gem in the PC Engine HuCard library. This overhead action-rpg is a port of the excellent arcade game of the same name. Things are pared back a bit for the console and the two player mode is gone, but it’s still a blast to play through. Excellent audio and visuals in this one, and a fun set of abilities to explore along your adventure, make this stand out from the pack. IMO it’s among the best arcade ports on the system, along with Samurai Ghost (Genpei Tōma Den) and the many great SHMUPs on PC Engine. This is my first time playing through the game- only made it to the lava boss before this.

Played using an Engligh Translation Romhack, since this was never localized:

The game looks excellent with the Original PC Engine palette. One suggestions though, when dealing with Turbografx/CD games in general: I suggest taking precaution when adding additional gamma correction, as you will notice its effects a bit more than most other systems, even at low values. SNES is like this as well, and the brighter NES palettes like CXA. You can easily alter the composition of the scene to something it is not intended, with high values. Same with overly bright scanline filters. You’ll want to dial that down a bit so you can enjoy the new palette to its fullest, IMO.

The Original palette for PC Engine was just discovered not even a year ago, in 2020. Hidden away in a custom Hudson encoder chip in the console, a LUT (Look-up table) was discovered that translates the raw RGB values into their intended target colors. Furrtek decapped this chip to gain an understanding of its inner workings, revealing the LUT. Rysha/Kitrinx then figured out all the math to convert the LUT and apply the phase shift to generate the colors and palette with an RGB index. Artemio confirmed the color accuracy to an extreme degree by using a broadcast vectorscope to compare to the original, unmodified console. The result of this is the « Original » palette option you see in the MiSTer core, which is the first time any emulator has gotten the original colors correct, and indeed made the MiSTer core more accurate than original RGB-modded PC Engine consoles, even. This is a game changer, and looks fantastic with the PC Engine/Turbografx library.

MiSTer’s PC Engine core was transformed into the most accurate way to play this console besides original hardware, largely in part thanks to efforts by srg320. He also created our SNES and Sega CD cores, and is now currently working on a Sega Saturn core for MiSTer.

None of this would be possible without the constant hard work of Sorgelig. It cannot be overstated how much he has done and continues to do for this project, since its beginning. You can support him either at his Patreon in the link below, or on Paypal, depending on your preference. MiSTer is a paradigm shift in how we can experience these classic games. This is a long-term preservation project that will continue to grow so that gamers today and in the future can experience these excellent systems as accurately and lag-free as possible. Donating what you can will help keep the updates coming. Thank you.
